Feather River Salmon Fishing

These big fresh salmon start running into the Sacramento and Feather Rivers in early summer. The season starts July 16th and runs into December, with peak fishing in August and September. Most fishing is done below the outlet hole and where the Yuba River comes in. Fishing methods include side drifting and roe and backtrolling flatfish. Average size of these king salmon is 10-15lbs with 20-25 pounds common. These fish fight hard and are a thrill to catch. There are times in the summer where the Feather River is the best place in the country to be salmon fishing. Most fishing is done in the Chico area, but we go where the fish are. Once you land one of these salmon you will be hooked for life.

My Sacramento River and Feather River trips include fishing for striped bass (also known as "stripers"), salmon, steelhead, trout, and shad. All of them make tasty meals. (And don't forget that I'll clean the fish for you, so you won't have to deal with the dirty work.)

  • Salmon can get big -- it's not uncommon to land fish in the 20-to-30-pound range during the late fall season. You might catch a king salmon as big as 40 or 50 pounds. The Sacramento River record for salmon is an 88-pounder.
  • Steelheads can be a little difficult to find, but that's why you're hiring me, right? I know where to find these elusive fish. They can be a challenge to hook, but once you get one in the boat, you'll feel the reward was worth it.
  • Trout are typically easy to find and not too hard to catch. They're a good fish to start with if you haven't fished before.
  • Shad are mid-size fish that prefer deep water. If you want a fish that will put up a fight, try shad: they'll usually jump out of the water multiple times while you wear them down.
